BREAKING: After FEMA Failures, Kristi Noem Out
Under Noem’s leadership, FEMA became a political weapon rather than a lifesaving agency.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secretary Kristi Noem has been fired as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, ending a disastrous tenure marked by incompetence, politicization, and catastrophic mismanagement of FEMA. Sabotaging Our Safety is calling on the administration to immediately establish FEMA as an independent cabinet-level agency, free from political interference and equipped to protect communities facing disasters.
"Kristi Noem's firing is long overdue. Her tenure at DHS was a masterclass in how NOT to lead during a crisis — she politicized disaster response, delayed critical funding, and left communities vulnerable when they needed FEMA most,” said Sabotaging Our Safety Advisory Council Member Rafael Lemaitre. “But firing Noem isn't enough. FEMA cannot continue to be subjected to political games and incompetent leadership. We need an independent FEMA, elevated to cabinet-level status and protected from the kind of mismanagement we witnessed under Noem. Communities facing disasters deserve an agency that puts their safety first, not political agendas."
Noem's record at DHS was defined by failure after failure. Under her leadership, FEMA became a political weapon rather than a lifesaving agency. She delayed tens of millions of dollars in critical disaster recovery grants, leaving communities across the country stranded in the aftermath of hurricanes, wildfires, and floods.
Her record of FEMA failures was exposed during this week’s Judiciary Committee hearings, where lawmakers from both parties confronted her chaotic and reckless approach to disaster management that has failed to help disaster survivors. From gutting the workforce to politicizing disaster response, Noem transformed FEMA from a trusted emergency management agency into a dysfunctional mess that couldn't deliver for Americans when they needed help most.
