Governor Landry Must Demand Trump and Republican Lawmakers Immediately Reauthorize NFIP
National Flood Insurance Program set to expire September 30 as Trump pushes disaster relief cuts, leaving millions vulnerable
BATON ROUGE, LA — With the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) set to expire in just days, Sabotaging Our Safety is calling on Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to immediately pressure Donald Trump and Congressional allies to reauthorize this critical program. As Trump signals massive cuts to disaster preparedness funding, the potential loss of flood insurance coverage would create a devastating one-two punch for storm-vulnerable communities across Louisiana.
The stakes couldn’t be higher: if NFIP lapses on September 30, insurance companies will be unable to sell new policies or renew existing coverage, leaving homeowners defenseless against flood damage in states that face some of the nation’s highest flood risks.
In response, Sabotaging Our Safety Advisory Council Member Ashley Shelton, President of the Power Coalition for Electoral Justice, released the following statement:
“While Donald Trump and his administration continue efforts to gut disaster preparedness programs, we cannot allow them to also strip away the flood insurance that serves as a lifeline for families trying to rebuild after catastrophic storms. As we just marked the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which claimed more than 1,000 lives and displaced more than a million people, we cannot allow Louisiana families to face the next storm season without the federal flood insurance safety net that has been their lifeline for two decades. Our Governor must use every ounce of political capital to ensure NFIP reauthorization happens immediately—families’ futures depend on it.”
The Critical Role of NFIP
The National Flood Insurance Program provides affordable insurance to property owners in 22,000 communities nationwide. Unlike private insurance, NFIP coverage is available even in high-risk flood zones and serves as an essential alternative to costly taxpayer-funded disaster assistance.
Nearly 1 million homes at high flood risk
NFIP covers over 500,000 homes with $145+ billion in coverage
Average claim payment: $36,000 for essential post-storm repairs
The consequences of inaction are clear: without NFIP reauthorization, vulnerable communities will face the next hurricane season with no federal flood insurance safety net—exactly when they need it most.
