STATEMENT: Abbott, GOP Texas Legislators Prioritize Redistricting Scheme Over Flood Relief Again
Republican Lawmakers Plan Another Day of Gerrymandering As Texas Flood Victims Continue to Struggle and Emergency Needs Go Unmet
AUSTIN, TX – This morning, as Texas families continue living in mold-damaged homes and drinking contaminated water, Republican legislators are once again prioritizing partisan redistricting over desperately needed flood relief. Despite Democratic lawmakers returning to the state to address the ongoing disaster, Texas GOP leadership has scheduled another day focused on ramming through Trump’s gerrymandering scheme instead of voting on the disaster relief funding that could save lives.
Texas flood victims urgently need legislative action on emergency relief measures, yet Republican legislators are choosing to spend legislative time on redistricting maps instead of addressing the crisis in their own state. This cynical prioritization of gerrymandering over emergency flood relief exposes where these legislators’ true priorities lie: protecting their political power over protecting Texans’ lives.
In response, Sabotaging Our Safety Advisory Council member Derrick Osobase, CWA District 6 Vice President, released the following statement:
“Texas Republican legislators are showing their true colors today. While Texas families are still sick from mold exposure and our communities still lack clean drinking water, Governor Abbott and his lap dogs in the legislature are prioritizing map-rigging over voting on desperately needed flood relief measures.
“It is a moral failure of the highest order to be putting their dangerous political power grab ahead of the help their suffering constituents need and deserve.”
